Before the obsession with Pokémon (or the Iron Chef, for that matter) and post-Ultraman fever (the first time around), North America was swept up in Japan's envelope-pushing superhero-fashioned cartoons, which eventually became known as both Japanimation and anime. Now hip mainstream Japanimation has made an indelible mark upon the pop culture of post-boomers, Gen X'ers, and beyond. In tribute to the now-classic animations and their music, Rhino has assembled The Best of Anime, a collection of theme songs from shows dating back to the earliest fare ("Gigantor," "Astro Boy") and reaching decades ahead to include "Cutey Honey" and the theme from Sailor Moon. Irrepressibly linked to highly stylized animation, these songs (largely sung in Japanese) affect the mod Technicolor ambiance of their respective vehicles, making for hokey hilarity and high-spirited enjoyment. --Paige La Grone
