About Me
Marcus Michael Patrick Feehily (born 28 May 1980 in Sligo, Ireland), better known as Mark Feehily, is a member of the popular Irish vocal pop group, Westlife.
He has two younger brothers named Barry (born 1985) and Colin (born 1989). His parents are Marie Feehily (Verdon before marriage) and Oliver Feehily.
In Westlife's music, Mark is distinctive for his rich, soulful voice, which is prominently featured in all of Westlife's songs. He is generally considered the second lead to Shane Filan's first lead. Nicky Byrne and Kian Egan comprise the rest of the group.
Private life
Feehily publicly came out as gay in the UK tabloid The Sun, and announced his long-term relationship with Kevin McDaid, a member of the now-defunct British boy band V.In an interview he said, "My life has got umpteen times better. My sexuality doesn't define me as a person, but it's a huge part of anyone to be open about it. It's changed my life totally as I feel so much happier and at ease. It's the best thing I've ever done." Unlike his band mates, for years Feehily did not discuss his private life.
Feehily later told Gay.com UK, "I am gay, and I'm proud of who I am.
The pair have been dating since January 2005. In yet another interview, Feehily told the Sydney Morning Herald that despite the fact that the majority of Westlife's fans are female, there had really been no negative reaction. "I am so much happier now and I think our fans can see that," he said. "Through the years of getting to the point where I wanted to come out, I had to go through every kind of emotion, but I can honestly say that the day before I came out, I didn't care what the reaction was going to be. That was the hardest point to get to."
Feehily said that while he did not intend on getting married right away, he is happy to know he could form a civil partnership in Britain with the recent passing of the Civil Partnership Act.They both say that when the time is right, they will look into having a civil partnership ceremony.
In December 2007, Mark and Kevin appeared on the cover of Attitude magazine. They also did a joint interview. In this interview, Mark stated that he wants to grow old with Kevin, and that the pair believe that they will be together forever.
Mark and Kevin also own a pet pug called Saffy.
Mark is a fantastic singer, something that his Westlife colleagues admit freely, Nicky even saying he'd "kill for a voice like his!" and no wonder. Mark's soulful vocals are very distinctive and bring an extra edge to the band's songs. As well as singing, he likes to have time to himself, understandable considering he has to be around people every moment of every day. That kind of thing drives me mad after a while, and Mark deals with it by getting away, wandering off. He's been known to get himself lost before flights and stress out Anto and the boys, but he never seems to learn! Mark is passionate about music, though and when the group was in LA in summer 2002, he had a brilliant time going off to small gigs and concerts, enjoying the kind of anonymity he can't get anywhere else, where Westlife is recognized. His passion shines through in his singing and performing, and as well as that, he is a genuinely nice person.He was so down-to-earth and lovely, making sure everyone got what they wanted, and it's the quality which helps to make him so likeable.
I think that Mark's the one we should watch when Westlife finish. From the signs so far, he could well be the one to do something unexpected and mad, a bit off-the-wall and crazy, and I hope whatever he decides to do, he'll do it successfully.
